A Day in the Life

A day in the life of an author … you wake up at sunrise, after only four hours of sleep that have miraculously left you refreshed and ready to start your day! The personal trainer comes by and gives you your personal training session right on the beach (because obviously, beach houses are necessary, and you’re RICH, since you write books and aren’t all writers super rich?!) You take a quick shower, enjoy a fabulous breakfast whipped up by your chef, and then prance up to your writing office that looks out over the ocean! You sit down at the computer to write, and the words flow perfectly, and you’re having so much fun that you don’t even notice that you’ve written well over 3,000 words that day. Next, you check your email (you’ve received tons of fan mail, duh), manage publicity on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc, and write up a fantastically witty guest post for a blog. Then it’s happy hour time, so you hop over to a local bar where you meet up with super famous writer friends like James Patterson, Meg Cabot, JK Rowling, and the like. You all talk about your days, bounce ideas off of each other for future books, and plan a writing retreat in the Scottish Highlands. Then you go home and catch the latest episode of the TV show based off your book, which is, of course, a PERFECT adaption that every fan of the book absolutely loves. Then you curl up with a great book, eat some delicious pizza that somehow doesn’t make you gain weight, have a glass of wine, and call it a night. In your bedroom, your husband is waiting—he’s the star of the TV show based on your book. The two of you met on set, since as the writer, you get to make every final decision about the TV adaption. You drift off to sleep, already looking forward to another fantastic writing day tomorrow.
Okay – confession. None of that was true. This is all an IDEAL day in the life of an author, but it’s far from the reality. Now, onto the truth.
I’ll wake up around 10 or 10:30, because I’m a total night owl and stayed up pretty late, needing to finish just one more chapter of the book I was reading. I’ll make a sandwich, an easy mac, or a lean cuisine for breakfast, because I don’t really like traditional breakfast foods, and the microwave makes life so easy! Then I’ll go upstairs to my room and check my email and my social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.) Next, I’ll bring up the word document for my work in progress, alongside the detailed outline I’d written to keep me on track while writing. On a good writing day, the writing will come easy, and I’ll be able to write 1,500 words without realizing where the time had gone by. But most days, every other sentence is a struggle, because I constantly read over what I’ve written and think that it’s absolutely awful. Of course, it’s only a draft, and first drafts aren’t meant to be masterpieces, but it’s just WAY too easy to pick apart what I’m writing. I need to stop being so critical while drafting! I’ll force out a minimum of 1,000 words—hopefully more if I get on a good flow. Once done, I’ll track the words in an Excel document. Because nothing feels better than knowing that I’ve finished writing my minimum 1,000 words for the day. That’s the hardest part, and it’s over! Next, I’ll complete any other work that needs doing—writing up guest posts, answering interviews, commissioning a cover for an upcoming book, doing a final copy edits run for an upcoming book, formatting an upcoming book, etc. It’s really amazing how many tasks pile up that aren’t actually writing—they’re about managing the business of writing. Around this time, my friends might text me to see if I want to join for happy hour, which of course I must decline because I still look as if I’d just rolled out of bed, and I’m still working. (Also, discounted drinks and food can add up, which is tough on the budget of a writer). However, about once a week I’ll join my friends for ladies night at a local place at 9, because the drinks are free, and by 9 I’m usually finished working for the day.
Also—if I’m editing a book instead of writing it, I’ll ignore everything else and edit for 10-12 hours straight. Especially if I’m on deadline. On deadline, it’s not unusual to not leave the house for an entire week. Welcome to the not-so-glamorous life of a writer. ☺
But remember—we write because we love it, and we hope that the readers enjoy the stories that we create! Hearing from fans of the books makes everything MORE than worth it <3

Guest Post ~ Lindsay Marie Miller (Author of Emerald Green), How to Be An Incurable Romantic

How To Be An Incurable Romantic

I am a self-proclaimed romantic, and an incurable one at that. While this may not come as a surprise to those who have read my novels, I’ll admit to the rest that I dressed up as a Disney princess nearly every Halloween in my childhood years and loved every minute of it. Trick-or-treating was an entirely different experience when I was wearing a sparkly dress and a shiny tiara atop my head.
But with the fairy tale allusion came the hope of meeting Prince Charming one day. You know, the tall, dark, and handsome; the knight in shining armor; the brooding compliment to my swooning Cinderella.
In my youthful ignorance, I had yet to learn that Cinderella’s Happily Ever After is something that appears so attainable in Technicolor, and yet, digresses remarkably far from reality. Because not all men are frogs, and we’re certainly not a world full of princes and princesses.
After surviving my teens, and then stumbling into adulthood, I found myself feeling just as drawn to love stories as ever before. Only this time, something had changed. While off gallivanting in the world of romance novels, I discovered that the handsome male lead didn’t have to be charming, or even a prince, anymore. He just had to be real, a good guy, and worthy of our heroine’s love.
Because, if we’re being honest here, isn’t that what we all want?
If I’m allowed to speak for all of us romantics out there, I’d like to say that we all long for a real person (not some character out of a fairy tale), who will pay attention to us, be there for us, care about us, talk to us, sacrifice for us, laugh with us, dance with us, respect us, cherish us, value us, WANT us, NEED us, and most importantly, LOVE us.
So, why continue to read about a fictionalized character when all we want is a real person?
HOPE.
We enjoy love stories, because they provide us with the hope of finding that one person out there, in this great big world, who was meant for each of us. I’m not specifically referring to soulmates, so to speak. But rather, the one individual that you are compatible with, in love with, and loved and respected by. Your equivalent.
And no matter your own personal experiences with love, stories give us the hope of attaining it. Whether you have found love, lost love, or are searching for it again, a good story can make you believe like never before, that the chance for affection and companionship with another is not lost. The opportunity is always out there, looming before us, just waiting to be taken.
Truthfully, love is not easy to find, or even probable under certain circumstances. But love is possible. And as a reader, that is the only thing you need to know. If two fictional characters can fall in love, then so can you.
This is the reason why romance novels are undeniably potent — because of the emotions that are evoked within the reader, such as faith in possibilities. It’s not about the best writer, style, or story; it’s about how certain words make the reader feel. It is what happens in the novel, not the sentence structure chosen to describe what happens, that keeps everyone coming back for more.
We all want to be loved, and just because our own romantic endeavors don’t unfold like scenes in a movie doesn’t mean they are any less ideal.
They are possible. They are hopeful. And they are real.
Now, that doesn’t mean that I don’t still want the fairytale Happily Ever After with my very own Prince Charming. It just means that I have redefined what that means. I don’t want to sit at home knitting all day, while he is off slaying dragons. Honestly, I’d kind of like to be there, slaying them with him.
Well…not kind of. I want to be there slaying dragons with him.
Because the only Prince Charming that really matters, is the one who loves the real, tangible, un-fictionalized version of us all.

Guest Post by Andrew Joyce, Author of Redemption and Molly Lee

My name is Andrew Joyce, and I write books for a living. Amanda has been kind enough to allow me a little space on his blog to promote my new book, MOLLY LEE. The story is a female-driven account of a young naive girl’s journey into an independent, strong woman and all the trouble she gets into along the way.

Now you may possibly be asking yourself, What is a guy doing writing in a woman’s voice? And that’s a good question. I can only say that I did not start out to write about Molly; she just came to me one day and asked that I tell her story.
Perhaps I should start at the beginning.
My first book was a 164,000-word historical novel. And in the publishing world, anything over 80,000 words for a first-time author is heresy. Or so I was told time and time again when I approached an agent for representation. After two years of research and writing, and a year of trying to secure the services of an agent, I got angry. To be told that my efforts were meaningless was somewhat demoralizing to say the least. I mean, those rejections were coming from people who had never even read my book.
So you want an 80,000-word novel?” I said to no one in particular, unless you count my dog, because he was the only one around at the time. Consequently, I decided to show them City Slickers that I could write an 80,000-word novel!
I had just finished reading Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn for the third time, and I started thinking about what ever happened to those boys, Tom and Huck. They must have grown up, but then what? So I sat down at my computer and banged out REDEMPTION: The Further Adventures of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer in two months; then sent out query letters to agents.
Less than a month later, the chairman of one of the biggest agencies in New York City emailed me that he loved the story. We signed a contract and it was off to the races, or so I thought. But then the real fun began: the serious editing. Seven months later, I gave birth to Huck and Tom as adults. And just for the record, the final word count is 79,914. The book went on to reach #1 status on Amazon twice, and the rest, as they say, is history.
But not quite.
My agent then wanted me to write a sequel, but I had other plans. I was in the middle of editing down my first novel (that had been rejected by 1,876,324 agents . . . or so it seemed) from 164,000 words to the present 142,000. However, he was insistent, so I started to think about it. Now, one thing you have to understand is that I tied up all the loose ends at the end of REDEMPTION, so there was no way that I could write a sequel. And that is when Molly asked me to tell her story. Molly was a character that we met briefly in the first chapter of REDEMPTION, and then she is not heard from again.
This is the description from MOLLY LEE:
Molly is about to set off on the adventure of a lifetime . . . of two lifetimes.
It’s 1861 and the Civil War has just started. Molly is an eighteen-year-old girl living on her family’s farm in Virginia when two deserters from the Southern Cause enter her life. One of them—a twenty-four-year-old Huck Finn—ends up saving her virtue, if not her life.
Molly is so enamored with Huck, she wants to run away with him. But Huck has other plans and is gone the next morning before she awakens. Thus starts a sequence of events that leads Molly into adventure after adventure; most of them not so nice.
We follow the travails of Molly Lee, starting when she is eighteen and ending when she is fifty-six. Even then Life has one more surprise in store for her.
As I had wondered whatever became of Huck and Tom, I also wondered what Molly did when she found Huck gone.
I know this has been a long-winded set up, but I felt I had to tell the backstory. Now I can move on and tell you about Molly.
As stated earlier, Molly starts out as a naive young girl. Over time she develops into a strong, independent woman. The change is gradual. Her strengths come from the adversities she encounters along the road that is her life.
With each setback, Molly follows that first rule she set against self-pity and simply moves on to make the best of whatever life throws her way. From working as a whore to owning a saloon, from going to prison to running a ranch, Molly plays to win with the cards she’s dealt. But she always keeps her humanity. She will kill to defend herself, and she has no problem killing to protect the weak and preyed upon. However, when a band of Indians (for instance) have been run off their land and have nowhere else to go, Molly allows them to live on her ranch, and in time they become extended family.
This is from a review on Amazon:
“A young female in nineteenth-century rural America would have needed courage, fortitude, and firm resolve to thrive in the best of circumstances. Molly Lee possesses all of these, along with an iron will and an inherent ability to read people accurately and respond accordingly.”
I reckon that about sums up Molly.
I would like to say that I wrote MOLLY LEE in one sitting and everything in it is my pure genius. But that would be a lie. I have three editors (two women and one guy). They kept me honest with regard to Molly. When I made her a little too hard, they would point out that she had to be softer or show more emotion in a particular scene.
I set out to write a book where every chapter ended with a cliffhanger. I wanted the reader to be forced to turn to the next chapter. And I pretty much accomplished that, but I also wrote a few chapters where Molly and my readers could catch their collective breath.
One last thing: Everything in MOLLY LEE is historically correct from the languages of the Indians to the descriptions of the way people dressed, spoke, and lived. I spend as much time on research as I do writing my stories. Sometimes more.
It looks as though I’ve used up my allotted word count (self-imposed), so I reckon I’ll ride off into the sunset and rustle up a little vodka and cranberry juice (with extra lime).
It’s been a pleasure. Thank you for having me over.

Andrew

Review

I received an ARC for this blog tour.

I am in love with this story. This is an undeniable five star read. Jen, you have done an amazing job. This is another one of those reviews where it is almost impossible to write because I just can't find the words to do the book justice. How many times can "amazing" be used in a review without becoming redundant?

The story itself is amazing. It completely drew me in to it. This book is right up my alley. I loved every page of the book. Even when something was ticking me off, I loved reading it. There are so many details that must have went into the story. All of the information that goes into the story without seeming bogged down by it is so well done. The pacing is perfect, in my opinion. I feel like I can't reveal too much of the story. I think a lot of it needs to be experienced as it is read. The beginning was one that most definitely drew me in. It will have you turning the pages and wanting to know what the hell is going on.

The writing is such that I could picture what was happening as if I were right there with the characters. Now, the characters, they were all so great. Even the more questionable characters were great. I'm more of a character driven reader. And while this story most definitely had the plot, it has the amazing characters that would keep me coming back. I really liked Arabella's character. She felt so real (as did the rest) and very relatable, to me, despite most of her situation not exactly being relatable. Tove, Cast, Trinity, Rob, Leader Penthallow, Leader Decker, Caleb. They were all great characters. While Arabella captured my heart in one way, the character that captured my heart in a completely different way would have to be Carter Decker. Would you believe me if I told you that I blushed just typing his name? Yes, he will be added to my list of favorite fictional men (a.k.a. fictional men I have a bit of a crush on). His character grows a lot through this book and I grew to love him even more. And I must say, that I am Team Carter all the way. (I'm sorry, Tove, I really am).

That ending was definitely a cliff hanger. I didn't see that coming. I can't wait for book two!! Get on it, Jen!! Haha. We will all be ready to read more about these characters. 5 quills to this book, no doubt. Highly recommended.

Interview:
1. What is the name of your latest book? Tell us about it.
Me & Mr. Jones. It’s different from my first novel, Emerald Green, because the romance is forbidden. Finley O’Connell, the main character, is thrust into a dangerous situation with her new college professor. And despite the level of suspense, there is so much temptation dangling overhead. You really want one of them to just pick the apple and take a bite already.
2. What genre(s) do you typically write in and why?
Young Adult and New Adult. Romance must lie at the heart of either though, because that’s what keeps me writing. I also crave an element of suspense, so every novel I’ve written so far has fallen into the Romantic Thriller category.
3. How do you come up with book titles and character names?
Usually, it starts with one scene in my head, between the female lead and her love interest. The book title either hits me right away or appears throughout the writing process. As far as character names go, they usually come from whatever book I’m reading at the time or a movie I might have recently watched. They can really come from anywhere though. When a certain name clicks in my head, I know that’s the one.
4. Which books are you currently reading?
I’ve just recently gotten into Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series over the past month or so. I saw the movie with Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower the other day and just had to read the books. I plan to read the Splintered series by A. G. Howard right after. The book covers have the most striking, beautiful artwork, and I’m always infatuated by anything that has to do with Alice in Wonderland
5. If you hadn’t decided to become a writer, what would you have chosen instead?
A psychologist, fitness instructor, or personal chef.
6. What advice do you have for aspiring authors?
Don’t ever stop writing. Hone your craft as young as possible and surround yourself with like-minded individuals who believe in you and your stories, and view the written word as an art form.
7. When can we expect to see your next book?

Well… I’m currently working on the follow-up to Emerald Green, which will be the second installment in that series, as well as the sequel to Me & Mr. Jones. As far as the next release goes, you’ll just have to wait and see…
